Fool Ranch Dressing (gluten free, low sodium)

Fool Ranch Dressing (bowl by DBennett Pottery)

To any label reader, finding ranch dressing without monosodium glutamate can mean standing in the grocery store aisle for a long, long time. Fool Ranch Dressing has a short ingredients list and is ready in minutes.

1 cup plain yogurt*
1 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp black pepper
4 tbsp parmesan cheese powder (optional, makes the dressing cheesy and adds texture.)

Mix them up in a small bowl. That's all folks, show is over. Go home and enjoy your salad...

* We make our own yogurt, since plain yogurt can be hard to find. Our local store sells "fat free" yogurt, but I cannot call it "plain" since it contains gelatin and other thickeners. It is super easy to make your own and is worth the effort.

  1. We dried cucumbers this past summer and I add this to my dressing. It makes it taste like store bought. I will try this recipe, mine has more ingredients, this one seems simpler! I also like the yogurt in it.

    1. If we added cucumbers... I think we could call it "Tzatziki Sauce." How exotic sounding, and totally worth a try.

  2. This is great! We love Ranch dressing at our house, but I have yet to find a brand that has an ingredients list I can feel good about. All of the other homemade ranch recipes I've seen are not easy enough for me to get around to trying them... I'll definitely be giving this one a try!

    1. Thank you. I have found exactly one bottle of ranch at our local store that had no MSG. Generally, I look for MSG first since my eyes are trained for it.

Cutting it to a half-cup will give enough for a couple of well-dressed salads.

    1. Thank you, ma'am. Weight loss sounds like an honourable journey. Our youngest has nearly weaned so I can start focusing on my weight, too.

  4. Sounds like the recipe we use but I also add garlic powder and ground seaweed. The kids love it and the seaweed adds lots of minerals.

  6. I love ranch, so glad to see this quickie recipe. I, like you, refuse to buy it from the store with all the nasty ingredients - which means I don't eat ranch anymore (darn it!). Can't wait to try this.
